Generosity is the real name of the game when it comes to Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter and his wife Christy. The Bakersfield natives who remain part time residents held their fifth annual Joey Porter golf tournament and Boot Camp this weekend .101.5 KGFM was happy to start the week with Joey calling in from Miami to give the listeners a rundown of the upcoming events as well as some of his "Joey-isms" like how he was "catching some tanning time" before coming home.I was fortunate enough to again emcee the golf tournament dinner and awards show at the Bakersfield Country Club.Joey remained the star of the event with his hidden talent as an Auctioneer.Seriously,it was incredible to watch this man who in my husbands words is a "sack specialist" sack average bids for higher ones. This annual ritual continues to amaze me.Not only do Bakersfield residents (mostly men) donate dollars for a chance to play golf with some incredible football players, but local companies also donate product. Tacky or not my jaw continues to drop when six figure checks are written in the hope that charity survives these budgetary diseased times.Speaking of survival,Joey's Boot Camp doesn't mess around! Joey's agent Jeff Sperbeck put it to me best when he simply said Joey is a natural born leader with a commanding presence. That energy was everywhere Saturday as Dolphin teammates like Jake Long,Ronnie Brown,Nick Fasano,Ricky Williams, and Akin Ayodele ran over 300 Bakersfield kids through some pretty demanding drills. The players did not disappoint and you could tell the kids didn't want to let them down.8 year old Colby Warkentin said "Wow,this really is "Football High school" referring to what some of the kids mistakenly believed was the name of Joey and Christy's Alma matter Foothill High.Whatever the name,it doesn't matter. In the end the Porter's hope is that they can facilitate growth in the philanthropic community through their own leadership. If seeing is believing, then I can speak to the couples commitment.Thank you Joey and Christy!
